The influence of English Realists such as Shelagh Fell and Dame Laura Knight RA, is evident in this reimagining of a scene from the golden age of pastoral living. Without undue sentiment it attempts to capture a scene common to late August/early September across Britain, when the harvest was brought in without mechanisation at the edge of a hand scythe. The scene could be drawn from any of Hardy’s novels or from Houseman or Brook’s imaginings. The three figures, knee deep in a golden ocean of waving barley are fixed in motion under a bright, swirling, slightly ominous sky, which gives a hint to the threat from the rapidly changing seasons, and perhaps the coming war.
