Paintings that tell stories are always intriguing. Historically such works were at the top of a bizarre hierarchy, far above portraits, landscapes or the apparently humble still life. This large format figurative canvas, retains a looseness of brushwork, but tries to counter that with a tight composition and a playfulness. The scene can be interpreted in a number of ways, but depicts a vignette from the life of a circus community in the early 1920s, when white faced clowns, a slapstick performer and three young female acrobatic horse-back performers, take their leave of a friend from outside of the ‘family’ , perhaps for the last time. The oppressive crimson, black and ultramarine shadows on the Big Top, offset the gaiety and lightness of the costumes, settling them neither in a Renaissance past, nor a science-fiction future.
