The Red Jar [interior]

This brooding interior is another story within a story, which sets up questions which only the viewer can answer. The couple seated on the old iron bed, are unclothed, but look strangely melancholy. Are they contemplating some act, maybe they are post coital, maybe they are entwined in intrigue. And who is the young woman in the foreground, what is her relationship to them, and what does her expression betray. And what is in the ‘red jar’?
