Setting Out

With a brooding and smoke tempered sky, drawing inspiration from Valette, Lowry, and William R Turner, this small oil on panel, shows a scene familiar to Mancunians of the early part of the 20th century, as carts, carriages and cabs set out in the low light of the early morning, heading north out of the city centre. An impressionistic approach to the animated elements, contrasts with the solidity of the Manchester churches, townhouses and merchant’s warehouses, rendered in dark tones and almost silhouetted against the morning sky. The painting nods towards the hardships that built the city in its Edwardian splendour.
