Dodo McNeill was the second wife and muse of the celebrated Belle Epoque draughtsman and giant of English colourism, Augustus John. She is shown here, seated by the fire, cooking no doubt in the family encampment, as John and his myriad children travelled through England and Wales in a traditional Romany van, before the Great War. The use of colour owes a lot to the influence of the early Post-Impressionist movement, with the single seated figure outlined against a blocked background, and swirling campfire smoke uniting the planes.
